Located at the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro, Deodoro Zone has the largest percentage of young people within the greater metropolitan region. It houses the biggest military quarter of Brazil and the biggest military concentration of South America, with 60,000 men. Railway lines to downtown and other neighbourhoods of the suburb link the Olympic region to the rest of the city.
Surrounded by green spaces, the bucolic region will be the location of 7 Olympic competitions - Equestrian, Cycling (Mountain Bike and BMX), Modern Pentathlon, Shooting, Canoe/Kayak (Slalom), Fencing - and 3 Paralympic competitions – Shooting, Equestrian and Wheelchair Fencing.
Legacy
Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games will leave Deodoro Zone the legacy of new housing, retail and leisure outlets, as well as the X Park Precinct. Substantial investments in transportation infrastructure will reconnect this zone with Barra and the city.
