Located at the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro, the heart of Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be Barra, Rio’s fastest growing region and a spectacular natural stage with lakes, mountains and parks.
The Olympic and Paralympic Village, Rio Olympic Park, Riocentro, the IBC/MPC and the Barra Media Village are all located in Barra Zone and half of all athletes will compete there.
Barra Zone will accommodate 20 Olympic competitions - Boxing, Table Tennis, Badminton, Weightlifting, Gymnastics (Artistic, Rhythmic, Trampoline), Cycling (Track), Aquatics (Diving, Water Polo, Swimming and Synchronized Swimming), Basketball, Judo, Taekwondo, Wrestling (Freestyle and Greco-Roman), Handball, Hockey and Tennis - and 13 Paralympic competitions - Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Rugby, Judo, Boccia, Volleyball (Sitting), Goalball, Football (5-a-side and 7-a-side), Wheelchair Tennis, Cycling (Track), Swimming, Table Tennis, Powerlifting.
Legacy
Barra will benefit significantly from the Games with new venues, improved transport connectivity, additional private and social housing and environmental remediation of waterways and parks, all of which are Government priorities for this region.
The most significant legacy project is the Olympic Training Center (OTC) program and facilities with its headquarters in Barra, next to the Olympic and Paralympic Village.
