Wheelchair Rugby began in Canada in the 1970s, practiced by quadriplegic athletes. However, it only became part of the Paralympic Programme in the Sydney Games, in 2000.
To make up the teams, each player receives a score according to their functional abilities, varying from 0.5 to 3.5. The teams, consisting of four athletes, cannot have a total score of more than eight points – which guarantees that the dispute is balanced.
The objective of the game played by men and women is to carry the ball over the opponent’s goal line.
