Powerlifting is certainly the event that most requires physical force from its athletes. Disputed since the Tokyo Paralympic Games, it is practiced by athletes with cerebral palsy, spinal injuries, and amputations (only from the waist down). They are divided into ten categories, according to their body weight.
While lying down, the athletes must lower the weight bar to their chest, keep it stable, and then press it upwards until the arms are in a completely extended position, and then return to the original position. The winner is who lifts the greatest weight.
Powerlifting is currently practiced in more than 100 countries, and women competed for the first time in 2000, in the Sydney Games.
