The speed and adrenaline inherent in the Cycling competitions are relatively new sensations to the Paralympic athletes. The event, which began to be developed by competitors with visual disabilities, only became part of the Programme in the Seoul Games, in 1988.
Currently, athletes with cerebral palsy, amputations and others can participate. According to their functional classification, athletes use bikes with hand pedals, tricycles, or bicycles for two (for the visually impaired, who compete with a guide).
The rules are the same as those for conventional Cycling, with only minor alterations for safety. The races can be held on tracks or roads and are divided into speed, individual pursuits, and time trials.
