Rowing is an endurance test, a race of two thousand meters in which boats reach speeds of up to ten metres per second. The event has been part of the Olympic Games since 1896, and women’s Rowing was introduced in 1976. Currently, women compete in six of the 14 medal events.
The boats can have one, two, four or eight rowers. Boats with eight rowers have a coxswain, who steers the boat and directs the crew. In the other boats, one rower steers the boat by controlling a centerboard with a pedal.
