Maracanã

 


Revitalized and modernized, Maracanã area will have competitions of soccer, volley, bow and arrow, and athletics, besides 2016 Olympic Games opening and closing ceremonies. Therefore, the environment of the Complex that sheltered one of the well-known sportive monuments of the world will be remodeled and integrated with Quinta da Boa Vista. The improvements are also foreseen for the Port Area, so the Port of Rio can be used as an additional hosting place.

Built in 1950 to receive competitions of the IV Soccer World Cup, Maracanã recently undergone through a huge remodeling in order to receive the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of Rio 2007's soccer games. In 2016, the monumental stadium will host the big spectacles that open and close the Olympic Games, besides thrilling soccer games.

Right next to Maracanã is the Maracanãzinho gymnasium, totally remodeled and modernized. The place - which is remembered by historical moments of sports and artistic spectacles - will host the volleyball games. The area also has the most modern stadium of Brazil, João Havelange, which was officially opened in June 30, 2007. With capacity for 45 thousand people, it was built foreseeing the possibility to be expanded for holding 60 thousand spectators. This stadium will host athletic proofs on 2016 Olympic and Para-Olympic Games.

Passarela do Samba is also part of this area. It was designed by the renowned Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and officially opened in 1984, so the Carnival of Rio, one of the most popular parties of the world, would have a definitive place to happen. Placed at Marquês de Sapucaí Avenue (Downtown Rio) and popularly known as Sambodromo, Passarela do Samba is part of the projects of 2016 Rio Games, and will receive the arrival of the marathon and the bow and arrow tournament.
