Rio de Janeiro is motivated to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in anticipation of the benefits the Games can yield for Brazil as well as the legacy Rio can provide for the Olympic and Paralympic Movements.

Olympic values underpinning education and social development Brazil enjoys one of the youngest demographic profiles of any nation in the world. Recent initiatives by the Brazilian Olympic Committee, the Government and non-governmental organizations to develop youth oriented programs based on Olympic values have had a dramatic impact, demonstrating the tangible power of sport as a transformation tool for social inclusion and education. As a rapidly developing nation, Brazil has much to gain from the enhancement to educational and youth engagement programs based on values the Olympic Movement is uniquely positioned to provide.

Olympic Games a major driver for Rio’s ongoing transformation For many host cities, the Olympic Games has played a catalytic role in progressing city planning, ranging from the renovation of deprived areas to upgrades in transportation systems. The potential impact for Rio would be dramatic, supporting the fast-tracking of renovations to the port and surrounding areas, the upgrading of city transportation links, and the acceleration of major environmental programs targeting sustainable future development of the city.

Promotion of Brazil As the 7th largest global economy, with a diverse industry base, Brazil has a strong track record of innovation. Recent environmental initiatives have elevated Brazil to world leader status in areas such as bio-fuel programs, agri-business and recycling. The Olympic Games present the ideal platform for showcasing this progress globally.

New territory for the Olympic Games Brazil is committed to serving the Olympic Movement and partnering with the IOC to enhance and strengthen the Olympic brand. An important component of the brand’s success has been the ability of the Movement to embrace diverse nations and cultures. Bringing the Games to South America for the first time, with its 400 million people, will significantly boost this concept of universality, showcasing the Olympic Games in a young and vibrant new continent.

Regional sports hub Brazil’s status as a regional sports hub was confirmed as a result of the Pan American Games, and the country now provides training facilities and support to athletes throughout the region. The Olympic Games would fast-track the provision of additional state-of-the-art facilities for use by the entire continent.

Enhancement of the Olympic brand through Games experience The sense of celebration has become increasingly important to a successful Olympic Games experience. The Brazilian capacity for fun is unrivaled, especially in Rio, and Brazil has used its ’Carnaval’ and festival experience to pioneer new levels of sports presentation as well as diversity and inclusion. Brazil will aspire to enrich the city celebration and spectator experience for all, with the overall goal of enhancing the Olympic brand and inspiring future generations.
